I Quit My Job! And Became a Wizard!

cruise collageFirst of all, thank you to everyone who has messaged me regarding my whereabouts, it meant a lot to me to know that you were curious/concerned.

I know it has been a while. No, I have not cancelled my trip. I leave in less than a week for Bangkok and from there…I can’t say I have much planned. I really need to get on this planning thing.

The past couple of months have been a whirlwind of chaos. Before I quit my job (yes, I finally quit!) I was working 80 hour weeks. On top of my office job, I was also picking up extra night and weekend shifts at the theater.

I’ve been saving a lot of money, but not as much as I’d hoped. I barely met my minimum goal, meaning that I will have to be extra frugal if I’m going to travel for a full year. I’m usually really good at saving money, but I was pretty miserable at my office job, which zapped almost all of my motivation from me. Plus, I absolutely hate the winter. I hate the darkness. I hate the cold. I hate snow. And, most of all, I hate the holidays. I know…bah humbug.

So, in every free moment that I had, I was going out to dinner/drinks/Broadway shows with friends in order to keep my spirits up and stop me from crawling into my bed and not coming out until Spring. I wish I had saved more.

Oh well, the show must go on. I will travel until I’m nearly out of cash, then figure it out from there.

So, what have I been up to since quitting my job?

Well, I’ll tell you. I’ve been having a pretty amazing pre-backpacking vacation. My super-talented friend, David, is a cast member on the Disney Fantasy cruise ship that is based out of Port Canaveral, Florida. He invited me to visit him on the ship before I left on my grand adventure so I happily obliged.

During my week on the ship, I learned to snorkel in St. John (which is quite a feat for a girl who can barely swim), met a few Disney princesses, ate some amazing Puerto Rican food, and drank a lot of margaritas. It was exactly what I needed after a stressful end of 2014.

And while I was in the Orlando area, I went to Disney World with my friend, Julie. It was pretty awesome, especially since we rode Space Mountain about 5 times in a row, but it was so expensive. It definitely put a dent in my savings.

Then we visited Harry Potter World. Which was also ridiculously expensive, but totally worth it. Take all of my money, Harry Potter. Rob me blind and I won’t care. Childhood dreams came true. I’m pretty sure my brain imploded in on itself.

Now, I am back in snowy New York City trying to wrap up my life here. There is a lot to do, but I am slowly trudging through it.

Next time you hear from me I will be out of the snow and into the Thailand sun!

Yay, glad to see you’re still around, I’m leaving next week as well and it’s a whirlwind of prep – maybe we’ll cross paths in Thailand over the next month 😉
Also congrats on quitting, it’s a big scary step but man is it liberating!

Very exciting that you’ll soon be on your trip! I disappeared off the radar in my last month before leaving for Bangkok, I was just so busy doing stuff! It was so nice to leave rainy Britain behind and arrive in sunny Thailand a couple of weeks back though. Looks like you used your pre-travel time for a lot more fun things than I did!

I’ve definitely been having a little too much fun along with all of the work. But now I have so much to do over the next few days! I can’t wait to be out of the snow and in the sun!

Your adventure/cruise looks so awesome! I’m only wishing the best for you girl. If you end up rolling through California during your year long travel please let me know. You always have a place to stay here in sunny Los Angeles and I’ll take you around Hollyweird and Malibu and Angelino things. 🙂
    Love,
    Kate

Just so you know, I am totally going to be living vicariously through you over the next few months. You have probably landed in Bangkok a short time ago so I hope you aren’t too jet lagged.

Wherever you end up, try to come back to Thailand for Songkran in April. It’s an insane amount of fun.

Thank you! My body is very confused about the time (I woke up at 5am today), but I’m very happy to be here! I am definitely going to try to come back in April!
